International Workshop
"HADRONIC ATOMS AND POSITRONIUM IN THE STANDARD MODEL"

General Information
The Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research organizes the International Workshop "Hadronic Atoms and Positronium in the Standard Model" The Workshop will be held in Dubna, Moscow Region, Russia, during May 26-31, 1998.

The Workshop will be devoted to the study of the properties of hadronic atoms (pi-pi, pi-K, pi-p, K-p, pi-d, K-d...) and pure QED bound states composed from electron and muon (positronium, mu+mu-, mu+e-atoms).

At the present time the investigation of hadronic atoms has attracted vivid attention of both experimentalists and theorists due to the almost unique possibility of extracting the high-precision low-energy hadronic data from the experiment. The experiments on hadronic atoms might provide a very valuable test for the theoretical approaches which are used for the description of the low-energy hadronic interactions. On the other hand, theoretical investigation of this sort of systems is very interesting due to the nontrivial interplay between strong and electromagnetic interactions in the bound-states under consideration. Many important electromagnetic and strong corrections to the atom characteristics (the bound-state energy and lifetime) should be carefully evaluated before the results of theoretical calculations are compared to the high-precision experimental data.

The problems arising in the study of hadronic atoms, as well as the methods employed for this purpose, have much in common with those for pure QED relativistic bound systems (mu+mu-, mu+e-, e+e-). The scientific program of the present workshop will include the recent developments in QED, both theoretical and experimental. Various aspects of this problem will be covered, namely, the Lamb shift and hyperfine splitting in muonium and positronium, noncoulombic forces, application to hadronic physics.
