VI Research Workshop

General Information | ||||||||||
Research workshops on Nucleation Theory and Applications have been
organised at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia, since
1997 every year in April in close co-operation between the Department of
Physics of the University of Rostock, Germany (Dr. Juern W. P. Schmelzer,
Prof. Gerd Roepke) and the Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics,
Dubna, Russia (Prof. Vyatcheslav B. Priezzhev, Dr. Vyatcheslav I. Zhuravlev,
Mrs. Galina G. Sandukovskaya). The organisation of the workshops was
supported by colleagues from the International Department of the JINR and
sponsored by the Heisenberg - Landau program of the German Ministry for
Science and Technology (BMBF), the Russian Foundation for Basis Research
and the UNESCO-ROSTE.

Topics of Discussion | ||||||||||
While the general direction remains the same as in previous years, the accents
for the 2002 - workshop are, again, somewhat changed.
The first aim of the 6th meeting consists in the continuation of the mutual detailed information and discussion of the work done in the different research groups. As it has been the case already in previous years, it is expected that such discussion will be of great use for all of the participants and initiate further common research projects. As a second direction, the meeting is aimed for a continuation of a number of common research projects under way. One of the main topics will be the analysis of the problem how the recently developed model of nucleation and growth in freely expanding matter may be applied as an adequate tool for the understanding of multifragmentation in heavy-ion collisions. Another main topic will consists in the analysis of the possibilities of extension of a newly developed approach to nucleation theory to processes of crystallisation in liquids. As the third aim, a detailed discussion of bubble formation as a special kind of phase formation processes will be continued. This process is till now relatively scarcely studied, however, of great potential interest in a variety of applications. With respect to nuclear theory, particular attention will be directed to a theoretical description of bubble formation and growth in expanding nuclear systems. As a fourth direction, a comprehensive discussion of peculiarities of phase formation under time-varying external conditions is planned to be continued. As a fifth general topic of discussion, an analysis of different new approaches to the description of nucleation processes is anticipated. Hereby the spectrum of possible applications will range from segregation in solid and liquid solutions, bubble formation in liquids and condensation in gases to crystallisation of melts. In the analysis of crystallisation processes in melts, particular emphasis will be devoted to the effect of stress development and stress relaxation on nucleation and cluster growth. As another particular interesting example of aggregation phenomena, processes of aggregation of fullerenes in different solutions will be analysed.
As in previous years, the possible connections between cluster formation and
growth and general aspects of theory of structure formation processes in non-
equilibrium systems including different aspects of self-organised criticality will
be a topic of the discussion as well.

Some Hints | ||||||||||
The program is divided as earlier into lectures and discussion meetings. In the
lectures, commonly one main topic is addressed. The discussion meetings are
devoted to the continuation of the discussion of the problems, not finished, the
presentation of short contributions (less than 20 minutes) of the participants on
similar research, the general acquaintance with the directions of research in
the different institutes. The remaining time not covered by the program is
reserved for mutual discussions and direct co-operation.
The time for the speakers in their lectures is - if not specified otherwise - not limited to allow a detailed explanation even of details of the research and an extensive discussion. Nevertheless, to have some order in anticipating the program, commonly 1 1/2 hours are taken as a rough estimate for the duration of one lecture. Thus, changes in the schedule are possible at any time. The detailed schedule of the workshop will be announced here as soon as it will be ready (Appendix 2).
The workshop languages are English and Russian. If possible, English should
be preferred. Summaries of the content in the respective alternative language
will be given simultaneously.

Financial Regulations | ||||||||||
No conference fee is required. We will cover the costs for the stay in Dubna and
the travel expenses (railway tickets) for invited speakers from Russia and the
former Soviet republics to Dubna and back. In dependence on the funds
available, we can try to support - in very limited cases - also the stay of
colleagues beyond the circle mentioned above.
