SECOND BULLETIN

First bulletin, Application form, (on E-mail)

The Russian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research together with the Lomonosov Moscow State University organize the International Conference on fundamental problems of theoretical and mathematical physics to commemorate the 90 th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding scientist Nikolai Nikolaevich Bogolyubov (1909-1992). The Conference will be held in the autumn of 1999 in Moscow (27-29 September), Dubna (30 September - 1 October) and Kyiv (4-6 October).

The programme of the Conference will cover the problems of mathematics, mechanics, theoretical and mathematical physics to which N.N. Bogolyubov made a fundamental contribution.

Main Conference Topics

  • Mathematics and nonlinear mechanics (Chairmen - V.S. Vladimirov, Yu.A. Mitropol'sky)

Moscow and Dubna Conference Sites

Moscow is the capital of Russia, its political, economic, commercial and cultural centre. It is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The heart of Moscow is Red Square. The Kremlin and St. Basil's Cathedral are masterpieces of ancient Russian architecture. On the territory of the Kremlin you can see old cathedrals, the Bell Tower of Ivan the Great, the Tzar-Cannon and the Tzar-Bell. There are more than 80 museums in Moscow. The largest museums are the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts and the State Tretyakov Gallery. There are a lot of beautiful places, old mansions, cathedrals, churches and monuments in Moscow. It is also famous for its theatres. The best-known of them is the Bolshoi Opera House. Moscow is the seat of the Russian Parliament (the Duma) and the centre of political life of the country.
The town of Dubna, which houses the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, is coeval with the Institute. Its history is closely related to the most important events in the life of JINR. The streets of Dubna are named after well-known physicists: Kurchatov, Joliot-Curie, Veksler, Bogolyubov, Flerov and others. Dubna is a quiet and pleasing town lying 130 km north of Moscow amidst beautiful countryside. It retains primordial cleanness and freshness. Its surroundings offer peaceful rural scenery which, though having no famous monuments, keeps memories of the past.

CLIMATE: The weather in Moscow and Dubna at the end of September-beginning of October is mostly warm with average temperature of about 10 degrees centigrade. It is advisable to bring an umbrella.

Kyiv Conference Site

Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine with a population of about 3 million, is a scenic city situated on the Dnipro River. Ancient Kyivan Rus, which reached its greatest period of ascendancy during the 11th and 12th centuries, was a center of trade routes between the Baltic and Mediterranean seas. The architecture treasures of that period are the Cathedral of St. Sophia with outstanding mosaics and frescoes and the Kyevo-Percherska Lavra, one of the most celebrated monastery, with old catacombs, 11th-century church, and a number of museums. A walk along parks on the Dnipro hills on a calm day may leave very nice impression. In the evenings a large choice of performances is proposed by Kyiv's theaters and Opera House.

CLIMATE: The weather in Kyiv at the beginning of October is mostly warm but rain is possible.

Proceedings

The Proceedings of the Conference will be published in the Journal "Particles and Nuclei", special issues of the Steklov Mathematical Institute, the Ukrainian Journal "Nonlinear Oscillations" and the "Ukrainian Journal of Physics", comprising the invited talks basically. The Organizing Committee reserves the right to select contributions to the Proceedings. The publication instructions and size restriction for contributions will be given separately.
