BIOGRAPHY OF Ya. A. SMORODINSKY

born Dec. 30, 1917, Malaya Vishera , Russia.
died Oct. 16, 1992, Moscow , Russia.

Professor Ya. A. SMORODINSKY studied physics at the Lenigrad State University. He become the Ph.D. student of
Professor L. D. LANDAU, who was his mentor and leader all the life. He belong to the members of very small group of people (44 persons in total) who were able to pass through the full Landau's examinations.

Professor Ya. A. SMORODINSKY worked most part of his life at Kurchatov Institute for Atomic Energy , Moscow.

In 1956 he was invited by D. I. BLOCHINTZEV as the Head of the Theoretical Group at the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics ( now Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics), Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna.
Professor Ya. A. SMORODINSKY published well known monograph:
L. D. LANDAU and Ya. A. SMORODINSKY, Lectures on Nuclear Theory, Plenum Press, New York, 1959,
He published also 16 well known books on physics for broader audience and innumerable articles in popular magazines like "KVANT", etc. He was translator and Editor of innumerable foreign books in physics and mathematics.
He was co-Editor of the Collected Works of A. Einstein in 4 volumes (in Russian), what he considered himself as the landmark of all the life.

His BIBLIOGRAPHY consists of about 200 items. The best papers were published in the volume "Collected Papers" in series "CLASSICS OF SCIENCE", URSS Publ.

Professor Ya. A. SMORODINSKY worked at JINR during 1956 - 1992. He stimulated the development of researches in various fields of theoretical physics. He was especially open to discussions, jokes, conversations on arts and science. He was devoted book's collector and collected at home (in Moscow and in Dubna ) more than 11000 books. His presence at JINR, Dubna still persists.
