Nicolaas Godfried van Kampen or
N. G. van KAMPEN (or NICO van KAMPEN) (born Leiden, 1921)
was a distinguished Dutch theoretical physicist best known for his
works in statistical physics and nonequilibrium statistical mechanics
and thermodynamics. He belonged to persons whose
works contributed substantially to the irreversible statistical thermodynamics and many-particle physics.
N. G. van KAMPEN studied physics at Leiden University. His teacher
was Hendrik Kramers (1894-1952).
The PhD. thesis (1952)
of N. G. van KAMPEN had the title:
"Contribution
to the quantum theory of light scattering".
N. G. van KAMPEN worked all his life at the Institute for Theoretical Physics, Utrecht University, Division of Condensed-matter theory, statistical and computational physics.
N. G. van KAMPEN was the author of a few books; two of them are:
1.
Stochastic Processes in Physics and Chemistry, Third Edition (North-Holland Personal Library) ( 2007).
This book was (and still is) one of most readed and cited book in the field of irreversible statistical mechanics.
2.
Views of a
Physicist (Selected Papers of N. G. van KAMPEN)
Foreword of Gerard't Hooft, edited by Paul H. E. Meijer.
(World Scientific Publishing Company, Singapore, 2000).
This books includes his papers on various complicated problems of physics and general problems of science. It
reflects his sharp and brilliant polemic mind and is worth reading very much!
A review of this book was written by Dirk ter Haar:
"Nico van Kampen: charlatans beware!" in Physics World, January 2001, p.46
